Back to Basics
Terms that put you one step ahead – every day.
What Are Non-Performing Assets (NPAs)?
When a bank gives out a loan, it expects regular repayments, just like you’d expect rent from a tenant.
An NPA is a loan or advance where the borrower has failed to make payment on the principal and interest of the loan for at least 90 days.
In simple terms, it’s a bad loan, money that’s stuck and not earning anything for the bank.
Why does it matter?
High NPAs mean more stress for the bank. The bank now has to set aside money, called provisions, to cover the possible loss. This eats into its profits and reduces its ability to give out new loans.
