What Is Marginal Standing Facility (MSF)?

Think of MSF as the RBI’s emergency ATM for banks.

When banks are desperately short of cash overnight and can’t borrow from anywhere else, they knock on the RBI’s door.

MSF is that last-resort lending window, but it comes at a premium, usually 0.25% higher than the repo rate.

Why the higher rate? It’s the RBI’s way of saying we’ll help, but don’t make this a habit.

Banks use MSF when they’re struggling to meet their daily cash requirements or regulatory obligations.

MSF keeps the banking system stable by ensuring no bank gets stuck without cash, even during tight liquidity conditions.
