What’s Happening Beyond Markets?
  • S&P Global Ratings raised India’s economic growth forecast to 6.5% for FY26, up from their earlier prediction. The upgrade is based on expectations of normal rainfall, lower oil prices, tax cuts, and easier monetary policy supporting the economy.
  • India is launching a ₹1,000 crore scheme to boost domestic rare earth magnet production, targeting 1,500 tonnes annually. Despite having the world’s third-largest rare earth reserves, India currently lacks advanced processing technology and needs regulatory reforms to unlock its potential in this critical sector.
  • Oil prices fell nearly 3% to $66 per barrel after President Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. While this eased fears about oil supply disruptions, the truce remains shaky, with both sides already accusing each other of violations.
  • Gold prices dropped to $3,325, a two-week low, as investors question whether the Israel-Iran ceasefire will hold after reports of new missile launches. The precious metal lost its safe-haven appeal during the temporary peace, while Fed officials hinted at possible rate cuts in July.
  • The IMF approved $1.33 billion in financial support for Bangladesh to help tackle economic challenges, including high inflation, slow growth, and foreign currency shortages. This adds to the $4.7 billion bailout Bangladesh received in 2023.

What Is a Total Return Index?

A Total Return Index (TRI) is a comprehensive measure of the performance of a stock market index.

It includes not only the price changes of the constituent stocks but also assumes that all dividends and distributions paid by those stocks are reinvested back into the index.

Unlike a price return index, which only tracks the price movements of stocks, the TRI provides a more accurate reflection of the actual returns an investor would receive by holding the stocks over time.

This makes the TRI a better tool for assessing long-term investment performance, as it accounts for both capital gains and income from dividends.

For example, if a stock price rises by 10% and pays a 2% dividend, the TRI would reflect a total return of approximately 12%, whereas a price return index would only show the 10% price increase.
