India & The World
  • India exports 4.24 lakh tonnes of sugar to other countries so far this year. Most of it went to Somalia (over 92,000 tonnes). Out of the 10 lakh tonnes allowed for export, experts think India will likely export around 8 lakh tonnes by the end of the year.
  • India plans to hike import duties on select U.S. products in retaliation for U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, affecting $7.6 billion in Indian exports, according to a WTO filing.
  • US inflation in April 2025 is expected to remain steady at 2.4% annually, with monthly CPI rebounding 0.3% amid tariff hikes. Core inflation is likely to hold at 2.8%, the lowest since 2021.
  • China will offer nearly $10 billion in yuan credit to Latin American and Caribbean nations to boost development and trade, while also expanding visa-free access to deepen regional ties.

What are Import Duties?

Import duties are taxes charged by a country on goods coming in from abroad. These can be a percentage of the product’s value (ad valorem), a fixed amount per unit (specific), or a mix of both.

Let’s say a foreign laptop costs ₹50,000. If India charges a 20% import duty, the final price becomes ₹60,000. This extra cost makes imported goods more expensive, and gives Indian-made products a better chance to compete.

Governments use import duties to:

  • Protect local industries
  • Reduce reliance on foreign products
  • Generate revenue

But high duties can also raise prices for consumers and limit product choices. Sometimes, they even spark trade disputes and retaliatory tariffs.

For investors, import duties can affect company profits, pricing strategies, and trade flows.
