What is an F&O ban?

Some stocks get temporarily restricted in the F&O (Futures & Options) market. This means you can’t place new F&O bets on them; you can only close your existing positions.

Why does this happen?

Every stock has a limit on how much F&O trading can happen on it. This limit is based on:

  • How many shares are available for public trading (not owned by promoters), and
  • How much trading usually happens in that stock?

If the total open F&O bets cross 95% of this limit, the stock enters a ban.

It’s like the exchange hitting the brakes to avoid too much risk or speculation on one stock.

Is it a bad sign?

No. It doesn’t mean the company is in trouble; it’s just a way to keep the market stable.

When does the ban end?

Once the open F&O bets fall below 80% of the limit, the ban is lifted, and you can trade freely again.

Before trading in F&O, always check NSE’s daily ban list, as it can save you from placing orders that won’t go through.
