Top News of the Day
- India’s retail food inflation fell to a 21-month low of 3.75% in February, driven by declining vegetable and pulse prices. However, onion, potato, and edible oil inflation remained high. Experts warn rising temperatures may impact rabi crop harvests.
- Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) lowered India’s 2024-25 sugar production estimate to 26.4 MT due to lower yields in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Ethanol diversion was also revised to 3.5 MT. Despite this, domestic supply remains stable, with prices hovering around ₹43-44/kg.
- India’s steel industry sees little impact from U.S. tariffs, with exports below 100,000 tonnes. The sector prioritizes other markets, minimizing disruption. India imports more iron and steel from the U.S., meaning retaliation could impact U.S. exports more significantly.
- India’s quick commerce sector is set to create 500,000-550,000 jobs next year, up from the current 250,000-300,000 delivery partners and 70,000-75,000 in-house employees, according to a report by TeamLease Services
