Highlights

Indian equity markets ended marginally lower today because of ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel, volatility in crude oil prices, and uncertainty around US President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs. Additionally, the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged and signal a slower pace of rate cuts added to the cautious mood.

What’s Happening Beyond Markets?
  • India ranks 3rd in power capacity growth globally. Only the US and China added more in the last 5 years, says the International Energy Agency. Growing electricity demand is fueling this rise.
  • Bank credit grew 9% while deposits rose 9.9% in the past year. With deposits rising faster, the Credit-Deposit ratio stayed below 80%, says CareEdge.
  • The RBI has cut the CRR, and that’s expected to unlock ₹2.5 lakh crore in the system. This could boost loan growth by 1.4–1.5% and make it a bit easier for banks to lend, while also slightly improving their profit margins.
  • US interest rates stay at 4.25–4.5%. Inflation remains high, growth may slow, but the Fed still plans two rate cuts later in 2025.
  • Brent crude crossed $77 a barrel, hitting a 4-month high as tensions rose after Israel reportedly struck Iran’s nuclear site. With the US possibly joining in, markets fear disruption near the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route.
  • Platinum surged over 5% to cross $1,330/oz, its highest in 10 years. It’s up 45% in 2025, boosted by supply deficit, strong demand from autos, jewellery, and hydrogen tech.

What Is Total Return Index (TRI)?

While regular indices like Nifty 50 only track stock price movements, the Total Return Index includes dividends too.

Imagine you bought Nifty 50 stocks 10 years ago. The price index shows 12% annual returns, but TRI shows 14% because it assumes you reinvested all dividends.

Why does this matter? Dividends are real money. Ignoring them gives you an incomplete picture of your actual returns.

A price-only index undersells their true performance. TRI assumes you reinvest every dividend back into the same stocks, compounding your returns over time.

When comparing mutual funds or evaluating long-term investments, always look at TRI, not just price returns.
