Core vs Headline Inflation

Headline inflation measures the total rise in consumer prices, including essentials like food and fuel.

But food and fuel prices jump up and down due to seasonal changes or global events. That’s where core inflation comes in – it strips out these volatile items to show the underlying price trend.

Why should you care?
Because policymakers, like the RBI, focus on core inflation to set interest rates, it reflects long-term inflation pressure.

So while cheaper onions may cool headline inflation this month, core inflation tells you whether your rent, healthcare, and education costs are steadily rising.
