What is the Dollar Index?

The Dollar Index (DXY) measures the value of the U.S. dollar relative to a basket of six major global currencies: the euro, Japanese yen, British pound sterling, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona, and Swiss franc

If the DXY goes up, it means the U.S. dollar is strengthening compared to this basket of currencies; if it goes down, the dollar is weakening

Why does it matter?

A strong dollar can hurt emerging markets like India by:

  • Depreciation of the Rupee
  • Costlier Oil Imports
  • Foreign Investor Outflows

For investors, a rising dollar can lead to increased pressure on Indian stocks and global markets.
